How to Move Your Website From Office Live Small Business to WordPress

If you haven’t heard already, Microsoft isn’t including Office Live Small Business (OLSB) in it’s new Office 365 service. That means websites that were built using OLSB are going to disappear on May 1st. If you hope to just migrate your website from Office Live, it’s not possible. OLSB is a proprietary platform. Yet there are some tools you can use if you are familiar with HTML to make the job a little easier.

WordPress is an excellent alternative platform to build your website on. The number of themes available are impressive. Here are some tips you can use to make the transition to WordPress relatively painless.

Essential Tools

Install Web Developer Tool Bar in Firefox. This will allow you to view the css style sheet that Office Live used for your website and copy it. It will also give you access to the source HTML from your Office Live website. This can be useful if you have included formatting that you like.
Notepad++ is another essential tool. It will make cleaning up Microsoft’s messy code a lot easier. It is open source.

Steps

1. Choose a theme that gives you the option to have a similar layout if you want to preserve the look and feel of your Office Live website.

2. In your WordPress dashboard, go to Settings. Click on Permalinks. Select “Post name” so your URLs are search engine friendly. You can edit the URL so it remains the same as the old URL for the page you are moving to WordPress if you choose this option.

3. Look at your existing OLSB site structure. Create pages for each of the tabs you have on your Office Live site. Make sure you use the same URL as the old page. Some themes order pages by default by the time you enter them, so start adding pages from the bottom navigation tab (or tab farthest to the right). If you have two monitors, keep your Office Live website open on one monitor and your WordPress site open on the other. Otherwise switch between sites.

4. After you have created a new page in WordPress, go back to that page in Office Live. Copy the content off the web page and paste it into the appropriate modules for the theme you have chosen.

5. If the transfer process loses formatting that you liked, click on the “View Source” option in the Web Developer Tool Bar. A window will open that shows the HTML for your Office Live Page. Find the text that needs formatting changes and see what HTML was assigned to the text. For example, the HTML might be <h1>. This means that you’ll find information about how <h1> is supposed to look in the CSS style sheet. This is available in the Web Developer Tool Bar by clicking on CSS then “View CSS.” All HTML formatting has a CSS property, so finding the HTML class, style, etc. will tell you how you need to modify the CSS sheet under the Dashboard Appearance>Editor> tab. You will find at least one stylesheet with a .css extension. You may add styles if you wish to reduce the amount of changes

6. If you made any effort to optimize your site, you will find the “View Source” window useful. It makes it quick to recover the information that you’ll want to enter in a WordPress SEO plugin. Here are the HTML tags you need to look for: <Title>The title you used</title>, <meta name=”Keywords” content=”the keywords you used” /> and <meta name=”Description” content=”the description you used” />. You will only copy the information between the quotes into the SEO plugin. If you weren’t optimized, you can do this step later.

7. If you had graphics that you want to move to your new site, right click and save each graphic to a folder on your hard drive. You will be able to upload them to WordPress for insertion into your pages. If you used Office Live to size your graphics, you have two choices. You can use WordPress to size them, or you can size them in a photo editing program. For faster website upload speeds, I recommend editing the graphics before you upload them.

8. Even if you like the way the page looks when you transfer information from OLSB, switch from Visual to HTML view to make sure you haven’t transferred any tables into WordPress. Tables are an old way of organizing information that isn’t very search engine friendly. You want to reserve tables for those applications where they are essential-such as a calendar, list of products or schedule of prices.

Transferring your website from one host to another always takes time. Transferring from Office Live to WordPress may not take less time than creating a new site from nothing, though usually it will. The primary difference is this. If you have really good content on your existing site and good Google ratings, it is possible to keep all that by doing the move correctly.

The Life of a Work at Home Mom

Working from home can be the way to go, but be aware of obstacles that you may encounter. Being a work at home mom can be quite rewarding so let us follow her through her daily routine. The very first thing she must do; attend to her children each morning.

It all depends on their ages, but using her motherly skills she prepares each child for their day. If they are still babies or pre-school then she must either help dress them, maybe even change a diaper at the crack of dawn, and sometimes that can be really early. I must agree that it is probably harder with younger children working from home but you learn to adapt with regular scheduled naps so that you have time for doing the work on the computer. With school age children it is a little easier because you have more of a window of opportunity to schedule your work day.

However, you must not forget other things you must do such as laundry, house cleaning, and preparing meals. Scheduling is such an important part of being a work at home mom. A typical work at home mom has a calendar filled with scheduled times and appointments organized so she can do her chores, meals, children, and find time to sit at the computer doing her work from home job.
Here is what her calendar might look like for a typical Monday.

1. Alarm goes off at 6:00 am-She gets up showers and dresses, gets kids ready for school, prepares their breakfast, and makes sure they all brush their teeth.

2. 7:30 am-Takes kids to school and drops them off while encouraging them to do well in school. Returns home and feeds fish in aquarium.

3. 8:00 am-Checks her calendar for Monday’s appointments. Finds time to check her email and Facebook© account.

4. 8:30 am-Puts in a load of laundry from the weekend, and goes to the bank to make a deposit.

5. 9:00 am-Puts laundry in dryer. Sends out emails to her clients, and looks at her blog to make new entries. Since she is at home virtual assistant she fills out medical forms for patients making sure they are emailed or faxed back to the doctors she is working for. She works for two hours uninterrupted.

6. 11:00 am-Calls to make hair appointment for Friday hoping she can get in after she drops off the kids at school. Hair appointment made. One of the kids forgot his lunch so she must drive back to the school and drop off the lunch. Fortunately, the school is only a few blocks away.

7. 11:30-Takes laundry out of dryer and she folds and puts away the clothes. Next, she waters all the inside plants, a weekly chore she must do.

8. 12:00 pm-She prepares a light lunch because she is on a diet and checks enters the calories on her smart phone. Watches the news to keep up what is happening in her community.

9. 12:30 pm-She calls in a prescription and tells the pharmacy she will pick it up tomorrow. She then does a few chores around the house tidying up here and their.

10. 1:30 pm-Goes back to work on the computer first checking her email to verify that the doctor’s offices got the forms she faxed to them. She works on more medical forms she just received. She thinks to her self how much she loves working at home on the computer. She continues her work.

11. 3:00 pm-Time to get ready to pick up the kids from school. Picks the kids up from school and when they get home she gives them each a snack and talks to them about their school day while checking to see who needs mom to help them with their homework.

12. 4:00 pm-Next, she must take her daughter to dance lessons across town, also taking her younger boys with her. The class last one hour and starts at 4:30 pm.

13. 6:00 pm-Home now for the evening she prepares dinner for her family and has it ready in one half hour. After eating dinner the children help clean up with their mom. It is already approaching 7:00 pm and time for the kids to take showers and prepare for 8:00 pm bed time.

14. 8:00 pm-Put children in bed, reading to each one of them, and then tucking them in while they say their prayers.

15. 8:30 pm-The rest of the evening is yours, you watch a previously recorded TV program while reading the newspaper. You stay up long enough to watch the ten o’clock news and then prepare yourself for bed.

16. 10:45 pm-Go to sleep and think about your schedule for tomorrow, goodnight.

So why couldn't I get them to work? Why wasn't I making any money?

The answer - for me at least - lies in one of the four reasons above, okay, I confess, all four. Maybe you don't suffer from the same roadblocks that had stopped me so many times, but I'm willing to bet that at least one of the four reasons above applies to you.

I won't discuss how to make an online business work; the reasons above are clues, and you probably have the materials you to make an online income you can live on anyway. You just aren't using them.
So let's dig a little deeper into the four reasons above.

1. You aren't a professional business person.

You don't have to be a professional business person to run a business online, but you do need some clue as to how to organize a business, how to track sales and inventory (even if you don't sell anything yourself), you need some knowledge of accounting, and most important, you need to know how to make sales.
If you don't know these things, trying to learn them while simultaneously trying to start a business is definitely the hard way to do it.

2. You aren't doing what your heart wants you to do.

This is the most amorphous of reasons and it's a reason which the vast majority of people - all people - never seem to get. And those who do report living in a kind of bliss. That was something I had always hoped to experience.

Your heart wants many things; a beautiful, big house, a fancy car, more money, better health, a trim, fit body. We know that most of these things are just hopes and dreams, they aren't something serious. But somewhere in your heart lies your perfect work, your true calling and your reason for living. It is what you were born for, made for and it is the purpose of your life.

99% of all people never find it. When you don't obey this subconscious desire of your heart, you sacrifice the beauty and love that would otherwise be in your life. You sacrifice the prosperity and sense of abundance that is the natural state of the universe and you miss out on the great relationships, the beauty and the ecstasy of living life fully and you miss out on all the great friends you would have made.

Finding out what your heart is telling you to do is a perplexing challenge; discovering your mission in life is an odyssey for which many never reach the end.

3. You jump from opportunity to opportunity never allowing enough time for one to work.

This may be the one reason that may be common for the great majority of people. You abandon ship right before your ship sails into port. Before you get all uppity, you aren't alone. I suspect that we all have been there at one time or another, and many seem permanently stuck in this condition.

4. You don't follow-through.

This is the biggie. This is probably the greatest factor sabotaging your success at an online business. You buy something, take it home or download it and you take a quick look at it - and then you forget it. Oh, you may work at it for a few days or even a few weeks but after a certain amount of time, you give up on this opportunity believing it doesn't work or you've been ripped off or you just forget about and jump to the next "best thing."
